Community walks are being held by staff at the local Kings Road Medical Centre (KRMC) to help tackle isolation and mental health for the elderly and vulnerable in West London.
Taking place on a Saturday every six weeks, and organised in partnership with My Care My Way (MCMY), the community walk supports the medical centre’s patients to network and make new friends. The walks also raise awareness of the many health care options available to patients.
Dr Sarah Ahmed, KRMC GP (and also a representative of MCMY), said: “I hold a weekly clinic as the frailty lead at the KRMC practice, and patients were telling me they would appreciate someone to walk with as company. This really touched me and I wanted to help. so arranged these walks and invited patients who access our health care services to build a local community. I felt that patients might find hard conversations easier if they could access clinicians directly on a walk.”
A number of staff volunteer in their own time for the walks and have found the activity has benefited their own wellbeing too.
Courtney Morris, KRMC administrator, said: “It was great seeing our patients getting to know each other and sharing their life experiences. I could see that it made a difference to their day and it was even better to hear that they wanted to make the walks more frequent.”
The walks include a coffee, tea and cake with staff rotating in pairs to speak with patients and get to know them. The volunteers are there to support them in many ways, with mobile phone lessons a common request. Patients have certainly appreciated the support.
Mary Coplestone-Boughey and Jen Rogers said: “We’d like to thank the team for organising the park outing. It was an excellent way to support the elderly and disabled patients with the opportunity for social gatherings with professional support. We hope it leads to many more events.”
My Care My Way have helped organise the walks and support the over 70s population in the community, referring individuals to social services and other networks such as Age UK.
Mishiva Verdi from MCMY said: “”Supporting MCMY patients attending the KRMC Frailty Walk has been a great success! I have received wonderful feedback from patients and word is getting out. I look forward to working with Dr Ahmed in continuing the project.”
Dr Sarah Ahmed added: “Many of our patients are unable to walk long distances but surgery colleagues have stepped up and provided many wonderful volunteers. The meetups have left me with a great feeling and some of our patients have already arranged to meet up outside of our events. I feel so proud of all involved, especially following the pandemic.”
If you would like to attend the next walk please contact the team at Kings Road Medical Centre on 020 3006 9217 to find out more. Places are limited and will be given on a first come first served basis. Volunteers are also on hand to support those whose mobility might be a concern.
